What does deep sleep actually do?

Deep sleep is where your body does the unglamorous maintenance. Heart rate and breathing drop to their lowest point of the night, blood pressure falls, and the pituitary gland releases its largest pulse of growth hormone — the stuff involved in tissue repair and muscle recovery. What does REM sleep actually do?

REM is the night shift for your brain rather than your body. How much deep sleep and REM sleep do you need?

For a healthy adult, deep sleep typically makes up around 13–23% of total sleep time and REM around 20–25% — on a solid seven-to-eight-hour night, somewhere near 60–110 minutes of each. Two caveats worth more than the percentages themselves:

  • Deep sleep declines with age. Slow-wave sleep is highest in childhood and drops steadily through adulthood. A 45-year-old getting less deep sleep than a 22-year-old is not broken; they're 45.
  • Your tracker is estimating. Clinical sleep staging requires EEG electrodes reading brain waves. Which one matters more?

How do you get more deep sleep and REM sleep?

You can't consciously steer your brain into a stage. What you can do is remove the things blocking the cycle and give it enough runway:

  • Pick one wake time and hold it seven days a week. Boring, free, and the highest-leverage change available.
